Quality Assurance / Quality Control

What is quality? “Quality” is a comprehensive set of procedures, policies, and methodology designed to meet and exceed the expectations of your internal organization and outwardly presence and behavior as judged by your peers, clients, suppliers, and accredited institutes. The term “Quality” often invokes images of perfection, adherence to rules and regulations, and rigorous testing and evaluations, depending upon any one interpretation or position. Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) are often used interchangeably but do imply different things. Quality Assurance is the series of planned activities that are to be implemented within the system to ensure the resulting product or service will meet the required expectations. Quality Control is the operational techniques and activities required to meet the quality assurance objectives.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) evolved to help standardize this philosophy into a set of guiding principals that can be studied, evaluated, and applied to any company whether this company produces a product or service. The original ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 standards were first published in 1987 and 1997 respectively and, as referred to by ISO, is a “Generic Management System”. Generic as it can be applied to any product or service, and “management” as it reflects the internal organization as required to meet the company’s set objectives for their customer’s and/or environmental requirements. In December, 2000 ISO published its new series of standards as ISO 9000:2000 and by December 2003 this had been further revised to include the IS0 9001, ISO 9002, and ISO 9003 and resulted in a single Quality Management system standard known as ISO 9001:2000 and is applicable to all organizations offering traditional products and/or services. ISO 9004:2000 is a continuation of these standards and is designed to go beyond those requirements set forth in the 9001 standard.

ISO lists the eight quality management principles that best reflect management practices is as follows:

  • Customer focus
  • Leadership
  • Involvement of people
  • Process approach
  • System approach to management
  • Continual improvement
  • Factual approach to decision making
  • Mutually beneficial supplier relationships
